Upper Airway Disorders
Upper Airway Disorders refers to a group of conditions that affect the upper airway, including the nose, throat (pharynx), and voice box (larynx). These disorders can impact breathing, swallowing, and voice function. Any disruption or dysfunction in the Upper Airway can cause a variety of symptoms, from difficulty breathing to hoarseness and chronic cough. Causes of Upper Airway Disorders can vary from infections, environmental triggers, injury or trauma, reflux, respiratory disease or vocal overuse.
At Speak and Swallow, we work with you to improve your breathing function and manage your cough. Our Speech Pathologists follow current evidence in upper airway management and can offer various therapy techniques to best support you and your needs.
If your Speech Pathologist or other health professional wants to investigate your breathing and/or voice function, they may recommend a Functional Laryngoscopy.
Upper Airway Disorder Symptoms may include:
breathing discomfort

throat tightness

Dysfunctional Breathing
Dysfunctional Breathing or Breathing Pattern Disorder (BPD) is an abnormal respiratory pattern specifically related to over-breathing. Breathing Pattern Disorder is a chronic or recurrent condition where the normal pattern of breathing is disrupted, resulting in shortness of breath and other symptoms that cause discomfort. Dysfunctional breathing is a result of changes to biomechanical, biochemistry and/or psychosocial domains. Breathing Pattern Disorder can co-exist with diseases such as COPD, Asthma, Anxiety, Sleep Apnoea, chronic fatigue, pain and more. As many as 36% of adults with asthma, 50% of those with back pain and 75% of those with anxiety have dysfunctional breathing. In some cases, individuals with a breathing pattern disorder may experience worsening symptoms during sleep, especially if they have underlying sleep apnoea. Conversely, untreated sleep apnoea can lead to daytime breathing irregularities, including hyperventilation and shallow breathing. Everyone’s symptoms and needs can be different therefore our experienced Speech Pathologists will work with you and your medical team to retrain your breathing patterns to be more functional for your daily needs.
Vocal Cord Dysfunction
Vocal Cord Dysfunction (VCD), also known as Inducible Laryngeal Obstruction (ILO) or Paradoxical Vocal Fold Movement (PVFM), is a behavioural breathing difficulty characterised by tightness in the throat and trouble breathing in due to the vocal cords closing when they should be open. Vocal Cord Dysfunction can be triggered by factors such as stress, irritants, exercise, or underlying health conditions like asthma. It is often mistaken for asthma due to similar symptoms, but the treatment approach differs significantly. At Speak and Swallow, our Speech Pathologists have experience in diagnosing and managing Vocal Cord Dysfunction through targeted therapies that focus on identifying and managing triggers, breath control, relaxation techniques, and re-education to support the vocal cords to function correctly.
Chronic Cough
Chronic Cough, or Refractory Chronic Cough, is a cough lasting more than 8 weeks despite medical treatment. The cough is usually described as dry and irritating with a consistent urge to cough. Chronic Cough can be frustrating, disruptive, and impact your quality of life. Often caused by underlying issues such as post-nasal drip, asthma, acid reflux, or vocal cord dysfunction, Chronic Cough may require more than just medication to resolve. Speech Pathologists at Speak and Swallow are experienced in identifying and treating the vocal and respiratory components that contribute to Chronic Coughing. Through targeted therapy, including breath control, vocal exercises, and relaxation techniques, our Speech Pathologists can help you manage and reduce coughing episodes, improve vocal health, and restore comfort to your daily life.
Laryngeal Hypersensitivity
Laryngeal Hypersensitivity is a condition where the nerves in the throat become overly sensitive, leading to sensations of discomfort, tightness, or a constant urge to clear the throat. People with laryngeal hypersensitivity may experience symptoms such as chronic throat clearing, a tickling or burning sensation in the throat, hoarseness, or difficulty swallowing, often triggered by irritants like smoke, strong smells, or even stress. This heightened sensitivity can result from conditions like reflux, viral infections, or vocal strain, and can have significant impact on daily life and communication. Speak and Swallow works with you using techniques to desensitise the throat, improve vocal health, and retrain healthy breathing and swallowing patterns. Through personalised therapy, you can learn strategies to manage triggers, reduce throat discomfort, and regain comfort in speaking and swallowing.
Some people with Upper Airway Disorders may also experience Voice Disorders or Swallowing Disorders. It can be beneficial to see an Ear Nose and Throat Specialist or Respiratory Physician to investigate possible causes of your breathing difficulty. This will assist us in targeting therapy appropriately.
